Dr. Hugh Brainard at Ingham Internal Medicine and Pediatric Associates in Lansing is treating Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV, this week.
Symptoms are similar to a bad cold. They include cough, stuffy or runny nose, mild sore throat, ear ache and fever.
Babies with RSV may lack energy, act fussy or cranky, or be less hungry than usual.
Some children have more serious symptoms like wheezing or trouble breathing. If that's case, call the doctor.
RSV can be very contagious. To treat it, drink plenty of fluids.
You can take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever control, or over-the-counter decongestants for congestion.
Throat lozenges, hot tea, or gargling with salt water will ease a sore throat.
Also, propping up your head on pillows will make it easier to breathe and sleep. You can also try a vaporizer or humidifier to add moisture to the air.
There are a few things you can do to prevent RSV and other viruses from spreading, including: covering the mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, washing hands, and not sharing cups or utensils with others.
