If you drove down Cedar Street Friday, it probably looked like someone was giving something away for free.
Well, not quite.
"We have a big promotion, it's 99 cents off per gallon of gas with a Kroger Plus card," Dave Kowalewski, Kroger Fuel Manager for Michigan. said.
A deal to promote the new Kroger Fuel Center brought hundreds to Holt, who didn't mind waiting to save some dough.
"Two hours, we waited two hours," Ken Canady of Lansing said. "I missed my son at Everett High School and told him to catch a ride with friends."
"I've been waiting since 3:05," Sharon Harris of Lansing said. "This thing takes 35 gallons, I"m going to save 35 bucks."
One man even ran out of the very thing he was waiting for.
"I ran out of gas waiting," Edward DePew said.
Even though the promotion ran for two hours, it backed up traffic for even longer, which didn't amuse the business owners nearby who were thankful this was just a one-time event.
"At first we started calling our clients and said come the back way in, but now it's 5:35 p.m. and we still have clients stuck that can't make it in," Shanna Page, a hairstylist at "Serenity Salon," said.
There were a few technical difficulties -- at one point the gas pumps shut down -- even confusion when some people thought it was a total of 99 cents per gallon. But all of the people Newsten talked to said waiting in line was worth it.
"I really believe it's the economy," Canady said. "Every penny that someone can get, they're just trying to save as much money as they can."
It looks like it worked, and people drove off happy.
"Cheap gas is awesome," Paul Trimmer of Lansing said.
