By more than a 20 percent margin, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero has just earned himself another four years as the city's CEO after beating opponent Councilwoman Carol Wood.
"i've got a job to do here in Lansing, and I'm just gratified I have another four years to do it," Bernero tells us right after announcing his win.
Bernero declared victory early in the evening; but the past few months campaigning weren't as cut-and-dry. The mayor and the councilwoman have had some heated clashes-- clashes they say are now water under the bridge.
"I mean this most sincerely: I hope she's ready to bury the hatchet. I am. We need to work together to move this city forward," Bernero says of Wood.
"We will be working with each other. And i think part of this is wanting to make a difference for Lansing," Wood responds.
Wood, who will continue working on city council, says running for mayor was worth it.
"Is losing hard? Absolutely. But you wake up in the morning and you move forward," she says.
Bernero-- thrilled for the next four years-- says his work is cut out for him.
"Is it perfect? No. We certainly have a ways to go. Unemployment is too high, we still have a lot of work to do in the city. But I think we earned the confidence of voters over the last four years," he says.
Bernero tells us he has a long list of things he'd like to get accomplished not only by the end of this year, but in the next four years. But he says first thing's first; he'll take a few days to relax and get reacquainted with his family.
