Governor Jennifer Granholm is announcing millions of dollars worth of funding available to Michigan public schools for security improvements. With money from the Department of Homeland Security, Michigan is the first state in the country to offer this type of program.
Governor Granholm announced the federal funding in a news conference Tuesday. Granholm said $8.2 million is available for schools that complete three components by December 31, 2004. Schools need to update their safety plans, develop a tabletop exercise, and identify a critical infrastructure within their school. The tasks need to be completed concentrating on information relating to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive events.
The Lansing School district is already signed up to participate in the program. John Grant, Director of Public Safety for the district, says the grant money will help update their current crisis plan.
Every public school in Michigan is eligible to receive up to $2,200 worth of reimbursements if the tasks are completed.
