Access to Abortion Records

(Detroit-AP) -- The University of Michigan Health System won't be turning over any abortion records to a federal judge in Detroit.

Judge Avern Cohn had ordered the hospital to turn over records to determine whether they could be used in a lawsuit challenging a ban on a certain abortion procedure.

The Justice Department said it needed the information to establish whether the procedures were medically necessary.

The university initially asked the court to block the request, citing privacy violations.

But Cohn brokered a compromise that allowed plaintiffs access to the records, so they could identify any pertaining to certain procedures the Justice Department was asking about.

The university says no relevant records were found.
