Governor Jennifer Granholm announced about a dozen Cool Cities Catalyst Grants will be doled out to individual applicants of her Cool Cities Initiatives. That amounts to $100,000 for each successful applicant.
No cities have been chosen yet.
The Governor says Cool Cities is not intended to be just a trendy program but is critical to mid-Michigan’s economy.
She is concerned about the state loosing young, talented workers between the ages of 18 and 34.
The Governor says by reinvesting in cities, Michigan can retain more of those workers.
The latest Cool Cities Grant is just the first step for the cool city bidding process and pilot program.
The Governor says she plans to use already existing state resources like grants, tax breaks, and business partnerships to help reinvigorate some cities.
