Governor and Legislative Leaders Set to Meet On Budget

Governor Granholm and the House and Senate leaders plan to meet Tuesday morning to see if they can agree on how to fill a 900 million dollar hole in the state budget.

The Democratic governor today complained that she had cleared her calendar for a meeting this morning with Democratic House Speaker Andy Dillon of Redford and Republican Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop of Rochester, only to have Bishop say he couldn't make it.

Bishop issued a statement saying he'd tried unsuccessfully to meet with the governor on Friday, and that she knew he couldn't be there Monday.

Despite the backbiting, a Republican and Democrat who served on a panel that recommended how to deal with the deficit say they're optimistic a budget solution will be reached.
