With only one dissenting vote, a house committee in Lansing has approved a constitutional amendment that would eliminate the state's 158 ban on capital punishment. The measure goes to the floor for a vote that could come on Thursday of this week.

Rep. Larry Julian (R-Lennon) is sponsoring the measure and concedes he is about 13 votes short of the required 73 votes to send the measure to the senate. If approved in that body, the plan would appear on the November ballot for voters to decide.
