Same Sex Marriage Amendment

A house committee in Lansing has voted 6-0 to send a plan to ban same sex marriages to the house floor. A variety of groups testified for and against the constitutional amendment, which the ACLU said was not needed since the ban already exists in state law.

Rep. Gary Newell says that's correct but he and others are afraid local judges will toss out the law which is why they want to write the prohibition into the state constitution.

If two thirds of the house and senate vote to place this issue before the voters, citizens will decide the question in November of this year.
