Proposal A

Ten years ago, Proposal A changed the way schools were funded throughout the state. But a decade later, educators are still questioning the system that relies heavily on the economy.

Proposal A shifted the burden of financing schools from local property taxes to the sales tax and other levies. Supporters say it has helped reduce the inequities in school funding and level the playing field.

Those against the initiative say it relies too much on the economy. With declining enrollment and the state cutting back its aid because of the economy, school oficials say there has to be another way.

Educators across the state met at the Lansing Center on Monday to discuss this very topic. U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow says Proposal A has saved the average property taxpayer more than $2,000.
