The Standish City Council has pulled up the welcome mat for a proposal to house Guantanamo Bay prisoners in the northern Michigan community.
A soon-to-close state prison in Standish has been mentioned as one possible site for prisoners from the U.S. base in Cuba. Standish is about 120 miles north-northwest of Detroit.
The council was considering a resolution expressing interest in housing detainees at the prison. The commission for surrounding Arenac County has endorsed the idea.
But on Monday, the council stripped reference to the detainees from a resolution and instead voted 6-0 to express interest in a federal prison at the site. WSGW-AM says the resolution seeks assurance any project wouldn't put the area's safety at risk.
