Artists picked up their fiberglass cars early Wednesday. The cars will be sculptures in downtown Lansing all summer.
The Lansing Art Gallery selected 27 artists to work on 20 cars. Organizers of the project, called "Art Wheels," say the themes will vary, covering everything from a photography, to gardening, to an interactive car for children.
The cars were designed and produced by General Motors. The city hopes the cars will be a big draw, bringing visitors interested in cars and GM downtown.
Artists have about three months to complete their projects. The cars will hit the streets June 4. They will likely be displayed along Michigan Ave. and Washington St. Organizers say they are also looking at locations on Capitol Ave.
The sculptures will be on the street through Labor Day. After that they will be auctioned off.
