Republican Representative Larry Julian says it's time for the state to allow the death penalty to be applied in certain first-degree murder cases.
His proposal comes shortly after two Detroit police officers were shot and killed during a routine traffic stop.
The constitutional amendment Julian is proposing would need approval from a majority of voters to change the constitution. Previous attempts to change the 158-year ban on capital punishment have failed.
