The family was traveling back home from a weekend of camping when a woman noticed her husband's van was on fire.
She motioned for him to pull over and he was able to stop the van and get out, escaping injury.
Fire fighters say they don't know for sure what caused the blaze, but they think it may have started near the tail pipe.
By the time the fire crew got to the scene, the van was completely engulfed in flames.
The vehicle is being ruled a complete loss.
Traffic was held up on that portion of U.S. 127 near the College Road overpass in Ingham County for about 40 minutes.
