The Megamillions jackpot is up to $177 million dollars and commissioners say the bigger the jackpot, the bigger the benefit to the Michigan School Aid Fund. Commissioner Gary Peters say all the profits from lottery sales go directly to public education in Michigan.
Tuesday's jackpot is the second largest in the Megamillions history. Eleven states, including Michigan, are a part of the drawing. Tickets sales increase dramatically when the jackpot increases. Commissioners say with the state budget trouble, any additional revenue is a good thing.
Last year, the lottery contributed more than $600 million dollars to the school aid fund. The lottery makes up about 5% of the funding for public education in the state.
If there are no winners for Tuesday's drawing, Friday's jackpot increases to $215 million dollars, the largest in Megamillions history.
