A Lansing woman's death is deemed murder and her caregiver of 16 years is arraigned on three felony charges.
Ira Gudith, 49 of Lansing, is charged with Open Murder and first and second degree Vulnerable Elder Abuse in the death of 94-year old Margaret Robinson.
Robinson died in her home January 10 and investigators say Gudith killed her though they won't say how or why because the investigation is ongoing.
He was arrested on domestic violence charges last week and arraigned on the murder and elder abuse charges Tuesday. He was not employed by a home care agency.
Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III said, at a news conference Tuesday, "We had not expected to have results of this kind this soon." The results are attributed to a brand new elder death review board.
It was organized in December. The group of approximately 20 people has only met twice. They decided they needed to dig deeper into Robinson's death.
As is standard with unexplained and unexpected deaths, a medical examiner investigator was already on the case. Her role, at first, was just to find next of kin. Robinson had never married, had no children, really she just had her caregiver.
Her medical charts raised some red flags says Medical Examiner Investigator Connie McQuaid says, "Going through those notes I came across some information some psycho-social as well as medical documentation that alarmed me, it definitely concerned me."
Ingham and Genesee are the only two counties in Michigan that have an elder death review board that Ingham County Medical Examiner Dr. Dean Sienko is aware of. Ingham County has a child death review team as well.
