Legislature Smashes Engler Veto

The Michigan Legislature overrode a veto by Gov. John Engler, it was the first time that has happened in 25 years.

The overwhelming vote restores hundreds of millions of dollars to the state budget for aid to local governments.

The Michigan Senate voted 36 to one for an override. The House voted 105 to one. That is well beyond the two-thirds vote needed for override.

At issue was Engler's veto of $845 million in revenue-sharing payments for the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1. Engler said he vetoed the money because of the chance three ballot proposals could pass in November, potentially costing $1 billion he says the state doesn't have.

Only Rep. Andrew Richner and Senator Harry Gast, both Republicans voted against the override.
