A spokesperson for the Michigan Education Association (MEA) says this will be the third year Governor Jennifer Granholm has proposed keeping the $6,700 per pupil student funding. That’s the minimal amount the state will pay per student in a public K-12 school.
The MEA says this does not take into account inflation and rising costs and is in essence is a cut.
The East Lansing School district paid special attention the governor’s proposal on how the state counts students.
Currently the state makes their count twice annually, with the emphasis on the fall count.
The Governor proposes both counts be equally weighted.
This would help out districts like East Lansing who are suffering from declining enrolment and would provide more stability when it comes to planning for future school budgets.
