A representative from the program, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST), says only one school in the Mid-Michigan region will be competing in the upcoming regional trials for robot engineering.

FIRST is a national program allowing students to build robots from the ground up and have the robots perform a task in a competition.

The program gets students involved in engineering and the manufacturing process through teacher, corporate, and university mentorship.

The cost to build and compete with a robot can be high, however, and schools looking to participate must raise about $15,000.

Typically this is done through corporate sponsorship.

Regional competitions begin March 11 - 13 at Eastern Michigan University.

A FIRST spokesperson says only Howell High School is involved in the competition within Mid-Michigan.
