The University of Michigan is considering a 7.9 percent increase in undergraduate tuition for the coming school year.

The board of regents will decide that and other tuition increases Thursday. That's when the board plans to adopt a budget for the 2002-2003 academic year.

The tuition increase would give in-state liberal arts freshmen and sophomores a total bill of $7,486 for the year.

The university says it needs a large tuition increase because the cash-strapped legislature has frozen its aid.

Overall, the university's proposed budget calls for $1.1 billion in spending.

That's up 5.5 percent from fiscal 2001-2002.
