Eight statewide organizations have rented more than 50 buses to shuttle demonstrators to the state capitol on Tuesday to pressure lawmakers to kill the governor's veto of state revenue sharing.
Mike Brady of the Michigan Municipal League expects over 1,000 local officials to watch the vote in the house and senate.
Meanwhile Gov. John Engler is reportedly working behind the scenes to avoid the showdown vote. He is asking lawmakers to vote for a partial restoration of state aid but Brady says that is unacceptable.
The cities stand to lose money for a variety of services including fire, police and garbage pickup.
Brady says some local governments will be thrown into bankruptcy if the money is not restored.
The last time a governor was overridden was in l977.
