The Relatives as Parents Program held their fifth annual Kinship Picnic Sunday at Lansing's Potter Park Zoo.

The Relatives as Parents Program is made of aunts and uncles, grandparents and other family members who have taken on the traditional role of parenting a child.

Though these non-traditional families are borne of many different causes, their collective goal is the same.

"Everyone is going through the same thing we are," said Mrs. Cheeney, a grandmother who adopted her two granddaughters to get them away from what she calls an abusive home.

"We just wanna keep going and sharing things to help make the world a better place for the kids," said Cheeney.

The picnic drew people from all over the state of Michigan.
