Granholm Granted Authority

Twenty-two Senate Republicans have signed off on a constitutional amendment that would transfer from the State Board of Education to the governor the power to pick the state school superintendent.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm says anything that gives her more control over her top priority of education is good news. Sen. Wayne Kuipers from West Michigan welcomes the governor's endorsement.

Granholm is quick to add however that her embrace of this amendment, which requires a vote of the people, does not mean she is unhappy with the current superintendent.

"I support Tom Watkins and the board 100-percent,” she tells News 10.
