Cox Not Running for Governor

State Attorney General Mike Cox went on statewide public TV Friday to end speculation that he will be a candidate for governor in 2006. He says he will not run and did what they call a Sherman Statement: if nominated I will not run. If elected I will not serve.

Cox said speculation that he would be a candidate was damaging his relationship with Gov. Jennifer Granholm. The two held a half hour phone conversation this week in which he told her of his decision.

Cox has not ruled out a bid for governor after 2006 and says he will continue to be critical of Granholm when appropriate.
