More than 1,000 teachers picketed outside the district headquarters with signs that read, "Board Unfair," "Negotiate Now" and "No More Board Games" among other things.
They voted down a contract proposal last week that the district had called their "last, best offer." Many called that contract an insult, because it asked for teachers to pay a portion of their health insurance premiums and did not set aside wage increases they thought appropriate.
The district maintains the money simply isn't there. Other unions have negotiated deals with the school district that do involve paying for portions of their health insurance premium.
