Congestive heart failure is a debilitating condition that affects up to 5 million people. It leads to shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue and impaired quality of life. Medications help manage the symptoms but a new breakthrough procedure is actually fixing the failing heart.

Heart failure is a progressive, fatal disease. For one patient he used to be extremely active. But a series of heart attacks left him weak and frustrated. His heart didn't pump well enough to permit walking or working.

A heart transplant was his only hope until his doctors suggested surgical ventricular restoration. During open heart surgery at Baylor Medical Center, cardiac surgeons use a special device called a Mannequin to actually reshape the patient's heart.

Doctor's are able to restore the heart to its normal dimension, it's normal volume and to it's normal shape. This greatly improves the heart's pumping ability and studies are underway to determine the role it will play in improving the patient's quality of life.
