Governor Granholm has chosen the head of a civil and human rights organization in Detroit to become the next director of the state Department of Labor and Economic Growth.
Keith Cooley is the chief executive officer of Focus: HOPE, which offers education and training in the areas of manufacturing, engineering and information technology and has helped minorities and women establish careers and financial independence.
He will replace Robert Swanson, who is retiring as of March 2, nine months after Granholm appointed him to the job late last May.
Cooley worked for General Electric, General Motors and Motorola before going to Focus: HOPE.
He holds degrees from the University in Michigan and lives in Troy.
His appointment is subject to disapproval by the state Senate.
