After an accident this summer left him paralyzed, one man had to leave his job with Meijer. But now, his coworkers are working to get him back on his feet.
It took months of recovery, but Simon Reiffert says he's doing well. He broke his back while cleaning gutters at his home in Dimondale. He says the accident happened so fast, and his life is forever changed. He worked for the Meijer Distribution Warehouse for 35 years, and had to leave his job.
Now, his coworkers at the warehouse are acting in the spirit of the season. They are trying to raise $8,500 to buy Reiffert a stand-up wheelchair. Unlike a traditional wheelchair, the new chair would allow Reiffert to sit and move himself into a standing position. He says the chair would help his circulation, ability to reach for things, and to look people in the eye when speaking.
The project organized by the Meijer Warehouse employees kicks off on Monday, Dec. 8th and runs through Dec. 19th. Anyone interested in donating to Simon's cause can call Meijer at 517. 322.7006.
