Gov. Jennifer Granholm has requested federal disaster assistance for 27 Michigan counties facing the loss of vegetable, fruit and other crops damaged this spring by severe frost, freeze, snows and cold weather.

From last November through July 24, each of the affected counties had damage to 30 percent or more of their fruit and vegetable crops such as apples and cherries.

Crop damage estimates are being compiled, but Michigan won't know if it qualifies disaster status until crops are harvested.

Affected counties are Allegan, Antrim, Berrien, Cass, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Chippewa, Clinton, Dickinson, Emmet, Iron, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lapeer, Lenawee, Luce, Mackinac, Macomb, Menominee, Oakland, Otsego, Ottawa, Presque Isle, St. Clair, Van Buren, Washtenaw and Wayne.
