Suicide Prevention

Suicide is a leading cause of death among young people; a northeastern college is taking steps to prevent it.

Southern Connecticut State University is taking part in a unique training program called QPR: Question, Persuade, Refer. Much like CPR, it's a method to help save lives.

So far, more than 100 resident advisors have gone through training, faculty and hall directors will be next.

With QPR, students learn three life-saving skills: how to question a person about suicide,
Persuade someone to get help and refer them to the appropriate resource.

They are also taught the warning signs of depression: sudden change of behavior or attitude, sleeplessness, change in eating habits and/or weight and giving away prized possessions.
