"This is the passing of one of the great ones of the greatest generation," aptly stated Elaine Didier, director of Ford's Presidential Library in Ann Arbor. She's just one of the countless individuals who were personally touched by the former president.
"For those of us who knew him, it's especially hard," said Ford Library archivist Dave Horrocks. "We're all so saddened."
The library closed to the public as soon as word broke of Ford's death. They were preparing the exhibits and memorabilia Wednesday so that Thursday a proper memorial could be held in Ford's college town.
"We'll open 9 a.m. Thursday and the following days to the public," Horrocks said. "They'll be able to come and look into the President's personal office."
"In the lobby we'll have condolence books to sign that will be sent to the Ford family," added Didier.
The Ann Arbor facility will become a national hub for those looking to pay respects to President Ford. When mourners visit they'll be greeted by photos of Ford as a child, as a football player, and as a diplomat.
"I'm happy to say he was very much like the person you see on TV," Horrocks recalled of Ford's personality.
Didier says he'll be remembered for his character and integrity.
The area around the library was quiet Wednesday. Staff members say the timing of Ford's death is difficult for those on Christmas break. The university community likely won't fully be able to respond until after the new year.
"He's a major source of pride for the university," said Horrocks.
"I think the public will want to come and share condolences," Didier said. "And it's not just people in Ann Arbor. He was beloved by all of Michigan."
The library will be open all week for well-wishers, but not enough time, perhaps, for a man who left a timeless impression on the country.
