A Warren woman who police say stole money from an employer to pay off restitution for her theft at a prior job has been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
Macomb County Circuit Judge Peter Maceroni sentenced Laura Evans on Wednesday despite the 41-year-old woman's attempt to postpone the hearing, saying she wanted to donate a kidney to her mother.
Evans pleaded no contest to a charge of embezzlement between $20,000 and $50,000.
Evans and her attorney sought to delay the sentencing by presenting documentation she is a good candidate to donate the kidney.
But an assistant Macomb prosecutor protested, arguing the department of corrections can release her to a medical facility to perform the transplant, if necessary.
The judge agreed.
