11 Gas Stations Entering Agreements With AG

You may not remember September 12, 2008 as a significant date, but you certainly will remember what happened on that day-- a petroleum panic.

"It was really really expensive, it cost me 70 dollars to fill up," a Lansing driver says.

Hurricane Ike washed in fears of a limited supply of gas since major domestic oil facilities were in the storms path. That sent people by the scores to gas stations in a hurry.

But, when they finally made it to the pump, the price per gallon had soared to record highs-- far too high and illegal says the state.

The AG's office found 11 Michigan gas stations in violation, six of which are in Lansing. On September 12 their prices ranged from $4.99- $5.39-- prices that the Attorney General says won't be tolerated.

"We're watching, so if your prices are out of wack, we're going to come down on you," John Sellek of the Attorney General's Office.

Don't believe him? Those six gas stations in Lansing that the AG says were abusing consumers have entered agreements saying what they did was wrong. So, they've been fined anywhere from 500 to 1,500 dollars.

"They paid fines based on what we could identify as profits during a time where they raised prices to a suspicious level," Sellek explains.

The message here is understood says Nasser Murshed, he owns the BP on MLK near downtown Lansing and says one of his employees raised the price to $4.99 a gallon without him knowing it.

"It's a one day mistake and it happened...I mean it's a workers fault and it won't ever happen again," Murshed says.
