LANSING - Always remember-- put your cell phone in a waterproof bag and take it with you when you go kayaking. That tip helped a man get rescued from the Red Cedar River in Lansing Monday morning.
The man, who said he felt a little embarrassed by the who situation and did not want to give his name, says he got trapped in some branches a couple miles after he set out on the river from the MSU campus. He called 9-1-1 for help. The 61-year old man is from Saginaw, and was not familiar with where he was on the river.
Lansing emergency dispatch crews were able to triangulate his position, as the man talked on his cell phone. The Lansing Fire Department's mini-boat was launched and retrieved the kayaker from the river in Crego Park, just east of Potter Park. He was given a check-up by an ambulance crew, but was uninjured.
