Scientists have found out more information about how quickly very young children learn. They did it by tracking the eye movements of infants, and scientists do find infants do learn very quickly.
Psychologists call it "Object Concept." Researchers found significant differences in what an eye-tracker recorded, as different babies watched an image that would be temporarily obscured as it moved across a television screen.
The eye movements of the six-month-olds indicated that they already had an idea that the image would reappear while the four-month olds did not. This didn't surprise the psychologists. What they were surprised by was how quickly four-month-old babies would learn object concepts, even after just two minutes of practice watching a ball go back and forth.
For the next step of research, it's hoped to measure infants' brain activity while they're engaged in a learning task.
