GRAND TRAVERSE BAY - The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office has identified that East Lansing man presumed drowned in Grand Traverse Bay Saturday evening. 61-year old Robert Wayne Smith is believed to have drowned while helping to rescue his 2 year old granddaughter. Smith had taken his son-in-law and three granddaughters, ages 6, 4, and 2, fishing. Saturday evening at approximately 7 o'clock, the two-year-old fell out of the boat, and Smith jumped into the water to her aid. The girl was wearing a life jacket. The son-in-law was eventually able to maneuver the boat close to Smith and the child. He jumped in and was able to bring the child back on board.
The son-in-law told sheriff's deputies that he saw his father-in-law holding onto an eye-hook on the front of the boat. The son-in-law then saw Smith lose his hold on the hook and go under the water and boat. Smith was not seen again.
Area rescue crews continue to search the deep waters of the bay. They are using a sonar device to help locate Smith's body, but as of 4pm Monday, they have not been successful.
