Jackson County Commissioners passed a resolution "Protecting the Sanctity of Marriage," by a vote of 7-3. But critics say it sends a divisive message to the gay community.

The author of the resolution, Commissioner Rick Baxter, says his political call to action only supports current state laws, defined as marriage "between one man and one woman."

But gay rights advocates say this only further segregates gays who by Michigan law may not marry.

Baxter says this move will encourage other counties to do the same and give momentum to similar initiatives in the state capital.
