U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak is proposing housing detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, at an abandoned prison in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Stupak sent a letter to President Barack Obama in February asking him to consider sending the detainees from the war on terrorism to the former Camp Manistique, which closed in 2007 because of state budget cuts.

The camp is in Stupak's district.

But the Menominee Democrat said Friday he would not pursue the matter further without broad support from local and state officials and Michigan's two U.S. senators.

Republican Rep. Pete Hoekstra, who is running for governor next year, criticized the idea during a debate Thursday on Mackinac Island. He says the detainees are among the most dangerous people in the world.
