A fun first grade kid always asking for spare change to spend at the store. That's how D'Juan Higg's relatives and friends want to remember him.
The six-year-old died Wednesday afternoon when a loaded gun went off while he was playing with it.
Relatives say someone unrelated to the family may have brought the gun inside the house for protection, and the children found it and started playing with it.
Now, police are investigating who owns the gun, and why it was in the house. Authorities say they'll pass the case on to the Jackson County prosecutors. They will consider whether to press negligence charges or other criminal charges against the mother.
Meanwhile, police advise adults to keep their guns locked in lock boxes or with a safety locks.
