In a small town like Owosso, it doesn't take long for news to spread-- especially when the small town's big story is touching so many people.
"It's been quite a buzz," says Paul Koppa. "Everyone's saying did you hear about the doctors, did you hear about the doctors? It's hitting the community quite good."
These four doctors-- RIchard Neely, Peter Cotey, James Park and David Huff-- so-called pillars of the community, are charged with a total of 41 criminal counts, including health care fraud and illegally giving patients drugs like vicodin and methadone.
"I'm very surprised. The one doctor was my family doctor growing up," says Renae Wellman.
She's talking about Dr. James Park, a man so many know in Shiawassee County. Wellman also had taken her baby daughter to implicated Dr. David Huff.
"I'm very disappointed," she says. "I don't know what to say. It's a shocker. I was shocked."
"I went to see him once," says Koppa of Dr. Huff.
It turns out Dr. Huff also happens to sit as a trustee on the Ovid-Elsie school board.
"I'm shocked. It's sad to see, but it happens," Koppa says.
Dr. Peter Cotey is facing two charges.
We went to his Owosso office today where he's still practicing, like the other doctors.
He wouldn't talk to us-- but his patient Darlene Seymour did.
"I will not change doctors," she says outside of his office. "I don't want to see my doctor's reputation ruined. Nobody knows the good this man does."
Not according to authorities.
Cotey, Huff, Park and Neely are doctors police say are using their power not to heal this town, but to hurt.
Reporter's note:
We also tried to reach the other doctors for comment but did not reach them. We left a note at Dr. Park's office with his secretaries.
A fifth doctor, yet unnamed, will also be facing charges but he has not been arrested yet.
Laura Braun, the president of the Ovid-Elsie school board, would not comment on Dr. Huff's charges, citing that our phone call to her was the first she'd heard of the situation. She called him an upstanding man.
