A security check at a local high school turned up a few knives Friday morning.

Educators say the transition from elementary to middle school is difficult for some children. An expanding mentoring program can ease some of the anxiety for some students.

The Spartan Mentoring Program will take on more students because of added support from the city. The program involves Lansing middle school students and fifth graders.

The city of Lansing is dedicating $36,000 to the Spartan Mentoring Program. Officials say the program will expand to accommodate 80 more students.

The program has been around for the last 10 years.
