Bankruptcy used to be the worst case scenario for GM employees -- now news that some GM jobs could head to China.
"I think it's a bad idea, I mean you have a whole lot of people around here who want to work," said Lucas Glew, who works for a supplier.
"I think that's wrong," Keith Pokrefky said. "I think that's wrong for America. I think it's wrong for American jobs. It's un- American."
Reports out of Washington say GM is considering manufacturing more cars abroad, then importing them for sale in the US. It could save money by taking the American worker out of the equation.
"When I heard the news I was very disappointed," UAW local 602 Vice President Bill Reed said. "There are taxpayer dollars that are funding this bailout with GM and the Big 3. "I think the American taxpayers are helping this company out, [GM] should invest right back here in America.
Reed said his members have made concessions, it's time the company holds up its end of the bargain and keep jobs here.
"We're trying to make concessions and make ourselves productive and make this company viable," Reed said. "and they're trying to cut our heads off basically."
Though this is certainly a tough pill to swallow for American workers some say this move may be the best medicine for an ailing company.
"This company is sick, they're likely to file for bankruptcy," Charles Ballard said.
Ballard, and MSU economics professor said he knows outsourcing of jobs is difficult, but the alternative may be even worse.
"I think everyone needs to keep in mind that if this company fails, that's the worst case scenario," Ballard said. "It would be really good for the people of Michigan and for Lansing for GM to become a viable company. Right now, it's not."
Meaning the road back to viability for this American giant, may be through China.
GM has neither confirmed nor denied the China reports. Sources say the number of Chinese imports would be equal to about 23 percent of GM's total production within five years. The UAW claims that would be enough to keep four American plants open.
