The HOSTS Program, Helping One Student to Succeed, is being cut significantly this year in the Lansing School District.

The mentoring program, which focuses on reading and writing, will play a diminished role due to tough budget times.

The program served more than 200 students last year and was funded by a three-year state grant that came to an end.

School officials say the district would have to come up with $72,000 to fund the program.

Lansing School officials say a different grant and Title One money will allow the district to hire literacy coaches and additional literacy teachers.
