Thirty-five-year-old Bramlett Hamilton was arraigned on open murder charges Wednesday in connection with the murder of his own mother. Sixty-six-year-old Ruth Simms-Hamilton was found in her home on Seneca Dr. in Okemos Tuesday. Police say she died Monday and Bramlett Hamilton turned himself in to police on Tuesday. Police have not said how she was killed.

Simms-Hamilton was a professor in the departments of sociology and urban affairs at Michigan State University for more than 30 years. She dedicated the last 15 years to the study of African Diaspora, or the migration of people from Africa across the globe.

Michigan State University Press will begin printing an 11 volume series written by Hamilton on the subject this year.

Bramlett Hamilton was denied bond. If convicted he faces life in prison without parole.

Faculty and students at MSU say Hamilton was at the height of her career. They describe her as an exceptional scholar and teacher. Colleagues say she will be greatly missed.
