Move Over Law

Drivers who fail to give police room to do their jobs on the highway could face a stiff penalty.

State troopers from the Lansing post issued 73 tickets during a five-hour sting Wednesday called "Operation Red Light.'' The citations were for failure to use due caution for an emergency vehicle.

Ticketed motorists can pay a fine of up to $500 or fight it in court. The sting was to raise awareness of the 2001 "Move Over'' law.

It requires drivers approaching emergency vehicles with lights flashing to either move a one lane away, if possible, or slow down.

The law was inspired by the death of DeWitt Township Officer Gary Priess. Preiss was struck and killed by a semi while on a routine traffic stop in January 2000.
