Two-hundred members of Lansing-based 119th field artillery battalion will be called to serve six months in Guantanemo Bay. Officials say the troops will leave from Lansing and travel to Fort Dix, New Jersey around the first of December.
There are 500 members in the 119th, and it has not yet been determined who will be deployed. Units from Charlotte, Alma, Augusta, and Port Huron will likely send troops. While in Cuba, the 119th will perform security duties. Officials say they are currently working to determine who will go when the battalion leaves in December.
In addition to the troops going to Cuba, the Michigan National Guard is preparing two other deployments, one to Bosnia. There are currently 1,300 active Michigan National Guardsmen serving around the world, 450 of them in Kuwait and Iraq.
