It happened Saturday at Hagadorn and Harper Road in Alaiedon Township. Forty-year-old Chris Colligan from Mason stopped to help a stranded driver get her car out of a ditch. Police say as he attached a strap to her car to pull it out, a drunk driver hit her car which then hit him and another Good Samaritan. The other victim survived. Colligan died.
The 55-year-old driver who hit them, Richard Chamberlin, is now charged with operating while intoxicated causing death. Right now he is out of jail on $20,000 bond. If convicted he could face up to 15 years in prison.
Meanwhile the community of Mason is mourning the loss of someone who not only was giving back when he died but had given of himself many times. Mason City Administrator Martin Colburn new him as a co-worker, friend, and neighbor. He says Colligan continuously served his community, as a veteran, a code enforcement officer, and neighbor.
Colligan leaves behind a wife and four children. A memorial fund is set up to help them, in his honor. You can make contributions to the "The Colligan Children's Memorial Fund," at the Mason State Bank, 322 S. Jefferson Street, Mason, MI 48854.
