Senator Virg Bernero received the second highest number of votes in the Lansing mayoral primary and voiced disappointment at the totals. In reaction, he vows to work harder to gain the trust of Lansing residents.

Bernero lagged behind Mayor Tony Benavides by about 18 percent in vote totals.

Polling experts say a deficit of five percent or more could spell weakness for the senator.

A spokesperson for the campaign says that fighting a singe opponent (Benavides) will help focus efforts.

Bernero said concentrating on the issues as opposed to negative campaigning would allow him to bridge the deficit.

He also challenged Benavides to a series of mayoral debates.
