General Motors announced Monday that it would lay off some workers in the Lansing Car Assembly Plants. Union officials say about 200 could loose their jobs.

In a letter to all Lansing Car Assembly employees GM said they would cut the afternoon shift of the "C" System effective Jan. 5, 2004.

Employees on that shift help to produce the Alero and Grand Am.

Art Luna, Pres. U.A.W. Local 602 says he's concerned about the duration of the layoffs and claims there's always a chance they could be more permanent than the temporary layoffs that occurred the week of Oct. 13.

A General Motors spokesperson says market forces forced the shift cutback.

Luna says all laid off employees will receive 95-percent of their wages from unemployment compensation and GM payments.
