Two teenagers were wounded in a shooting outside a middle school, but the violence did not appear to involve any students.

The two teens, 17 and 18, were hospitalized following Monday's shooting, which occurred outside Webber Middle School in Saginaw just minutes before the end-of-school bell would have sent students pouring into the street.

Police believe the shooters were in a white Chevrolet Lumina and fired from behind the teens. Interviews with the victims have not yielded any information, they said.

District officials said the schools are safe.

"The schools are safer than the streets. We can control what happens inside," Superintendent Gerald Dawkins told The Saginaw News. But for people, "walking or driving through the neighborhoods, we can't give that same assurance. We can't control the neighborhood violence."
